To have good exam technique you need to :
- Prepare yourself physically and mentally.
- Know your subject details or facts.
- Master the skills required by each subject.
- Kn0w what to expect in each exam.
- Understand what to do in exam.
1. PREPARE YOURSELF PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY.
- a clear mind is important. Get plenty of sleep & regular exercise.
- take regular breaks when studying. If you lose concentration, have a brief break. It is not use sitting at desk pretending to study.
2. KNOW YOUR SUBJECT DETAILS.
- make sure you understand what you are studying. If you are n0t sure, ask for help.
- avoid studying at the last minute. It is not very effective.
3. MASTER THE SKILLS.
- most subjects have a skills component where you are expected to acquire certain skills such as ; map reading, essay, comprehension, measuring, calculation,interpreting etc.
- make time to practice the skills required for each subject, so that you feel confident in using them under examination conditions. Ask your teacher for help if you are unsure of any skill for a particular subject.
4. KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT.
look at past test and exam papers. Identify where you have made mistakes & make sure that you do not repeat them. Practise with assessment papers so that you are familiar with the format of the exam. You must know exactly what each exam requires, for examples :
- how many papers are there?
- what is the time allowed for each paper?
- how many questions in each paper?
- how many questions do you have to answer?
- are any questions/sections of the paper compulsory or are there choices available?
- what is the mark allocation for each question?
- how much time do you spend on each question/section of the paper?
5. UNDERSTAND WHAT TO DO!
- settle down quickly in the exam room and get your equipment organised.
- read the instructions carefully by underlining the key words. Ask the invigilator to clarify any instructions that you do not understand.
- read the questions carefully
- circle the command words and underline the key subject word to make sure that u understand exactly what the question requires.
- briefly plan essay questions and refer back to the question regularly to ensure that you are answering to the point.
- where possible, answer your best questions first & remember to stick to your time allocation for each question.
- set out your answers neatly and clearly so that the people marking your paper can follow your answers. Remember to number each question or sub-question correctly.
